BUT ENOUGH ABOUT YOU

Let’s talk about me for a while. Hi. I’m Doug Best. I’ve been an independent creative consultant (layman’s term: freelancer) for 15 years. I’ve done all kinds of work for all kinds of clients. Along the way, I’ve built a remarkably diverse skill set, and a desire to constantly learn. I’ve learned that enthusiastic creativity, relentless critical thinking, and potent problem-solving are the most valuable things I can bring to the table.

I grew up in the greater Cincinnati area. I graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 1991 with a B.F.A. in Graphic Design. I live in Villa Hills, KY with my lovely wife and our twins, Will and Ella, age 6.

I love to play No Limit Texas Hold ‘Em Poker. I’m pretty good, and will gladly come to your neighborhood game and take your money. I ride a Harley Sportster Iron 883, and it’s just about the most fun I know of. Woodworking is my hobby, and I would do it full-time if I was good enough at it.

That is all.

Design

This is a very expansive category. And I can cover it thoroughly. Websites, brochures, environmental graphics, packaging, advertising – you get the idea. Versatility has always been key to my success. My remarkably diverse experience has led to an equally varied skill set. This lets me apply my creativity and problem-solving to any project, including yours.

Branding

When it comes to branding, I’ve been fortunate to work for the very best. Over the years I’ve diligently earned my journeyman’s stripes by learning and absorbing all I could from them, and I can bring best-in-class process and critical thinking to any challenge. I can create insightful research, write killer copy, and design a kick-ass logo.

Illustration

You know, when I was a kid I just wanted to be able to draw pictures for a living when I grew up. This is pretty close. I love to illustrate. I have a “non-style” style – I try to let the project dictate how it should look. Illustrated typography and illustrated logos are favorites of mine, they merge my most beloved disciplines. I work mostly all digital, but still love my pencils.

Strange But True

Life, The Universe & Everything

It Is Not About the Money

Well, okay, it’s kinda about the money. I like money, I have expensive tastes. But it’s also about the work. About design. About creating excellence. And I don’t mean excellence only for the uber-cool projects with creative freedom and big budgets. I mean excellence for the shit jobs, the small jobs, the un-loved jobs. Those poor bastards always get the short straw.

Every single project has value to me, because A) I think design matters, and B) if I’m doing it, it matters to me. Design matters because design is communication, and good communication is vital to every aspect of our lives. And it matters to me because, as Aristotle said, we are what we repeatedly do; excellence, therefore, is not an accident, but a habit. Deep.

If you hire me, you aren’t actually my client – the project is my client. You’re the money, and let me again stress that I like money. But my goal is to make the project the best that I can. It is what motivates me, gives me feedback, and directs me, and ultimately that is what makes me valuable to you, the money (whom, once again, I like).

I love what I do. I strive to create exceptional work. I hope I can make some for you.

My Manifesto

Creativity begins with a blank page. Empty. Unadulterated. Infinite in possibility. Devoid of preconception or compromise.

What we bring into existence here – what we create – has the potential to be of great value and impact. What it is, by definition, is inconceivable pre factum. It can amaze. It can offend. It can redefine us. It deserves our respect, our effort, our commitment.

In our quest to excel, we will rejoice, we will despair; we will gnash our teeth and rend our hair and shake our fists at the heavens. And when, ultimately, we reach the summit, we will know it was all worth it.

That’s how I roll.
